Snow DayThe temperature in New York City has been above 95 for four straight days, and threatens a fifth tomorrow before finally “cooling off” to a “chilly” 89 on Thursday.  Right now it’s 101 outside.  It’s so hot outside (how hot is it?) that the snow in this photo is actually melting as I type this.

When I took this photo in Coeur d’Alene, ID, the temperature was hovering just under freezing, and I was out walking around wearing a lightweight jacket, jeans, sneakers, and no gloves.  I was cold, for sure, but looking back that sounds quite heavenly.  For those of you dealing with the heat today, hopefully this photo will remind you that as sure as it’s hot out today, it will be cold again.

Memphis Loves His Snow

Memphis Loves His Snow

Snuffy Does Not Love Her Snow

Snuffy Does Not Love Her Snow

Though I woke up this morning to barely a dusting of snow outside, the local weather people tell us to expect 12-15″ by the end of this storm.  While nowhere near the severity of “that big storm we had at Christmas in Spokane back on oh-eight” (yet), it reminds me a little bit of the setup.   It went / goes a little something like this:

  • Evening Before:  Expect to see 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow night, tapering off by midnight.
  • Morning Of:  Expect to see 4-5 inches of snow for the evening communte.
  • Evening Commute:  Expect to see 6-10 inches of snow before this stops.
  • Nightly News:  This should taper off around midnight, leaving behind 12″ of snow.
  • Bedtime Dog Walk:  (Memphis – Chow) “Oh boy, oh boy, snow!”
  • Bedtime Dog Walk:  (Snuffy – Pug)  “WTF is this? I can’t run in this?  I’ll follow Memphis.”
  • Next Morning:  (Memphis) Nose dives into 20+ inches of snow, submarines, with a “what the h*ll just happened?” look on his face.
  • Next Morning:  (Snuffy) Seeing what happened to Memphis, gingerly steps off the top step, then face plants into the snow.

By the end of that storm, we had about 32 inches of snow.  Over the next two weeks, we got hit by storm after storm, and in just over two weeks had over 5 feet of snow fall.  Granted, it wasn’t all still around due to compaction and blowing, but that was a LOT of snow.  Then the winter went to crap, it got warm, all melted, left a mess, and I was sad.

Here are two photos I took that back in Spokane.  Snuffy, as you can see, wasn’t pleased at all.  Memphis, on the other hand, would’ve stayed outside playing in the snow all day had he been allowed to.
